aperçoit à la vue des indigènes, trèsremarquables par leur vigueur musculaire. Les eaux et les alluvions dulac recouvrent des vases et autres objets archéologiques dun précieuxtravail, restes de lindustrie des Pokoman1. Escuintla, lancienne Itzcuintlan des Nahua, est la principale stationentre Amatitlan et la mer : avant la conquête espagnole, ce fut une capitaledelà nation des Pipil. Située à 442 mètres seulement au-dessus du niveaude la mer, elle est déjà dans la « terre chaude » et la végétation, qui croîtdans le sol volcanique bien arrosé que domine le cône de Agua, est admi-rable de puissance. Avant la construction du chemin de fer, les riches habi-tants de Guatemala descendaient pour la plupart à Escuintla pendant lesmois dhiver, de décembre en février, pour y jouir dune température plusdouce que celle des plateaux : chaque famille avait sa maisonnette où ellepassait la temporada, sous les ombrages, au bord des ruisseaux fleuris. 1 OttoStoll, Guatemala.
