Seulement les fondsdes vallées occidentales du Pamir sont habités par une population séden-taire, et des villages, dont quelques-uns portent le nom de villes, sy suc-cèdent de distance en distance. En aval du méandre dichkachim, dans le Badakchan, le Sarhad ouPandja continue de couler vers le nord pour aller rejoindre le Mourgh-abet les autres rivières du Pamir occidental, qui forment ensemble lAmou-daria. Cest dans cette partie du bassin de lOxus que se sont fondés lestrois Etats de Chignan, en amont, du Rochan et du Darvaz, en aval. Depuisle moyen âge, aucun de ces Etats na été visité par des voyageurs européens;cependant les communications sont fréquentes entre le Badakchan et lesvallées du haut Oxus ; en 1875, le capitaine anglais Trotter put envoyer sonassistant indigène, Abdoul Soubhan, reconnaître Je cours de la rivière Superficie du Bokhara. Population probable. Population kilom. 259 000 kilomètres carrés. 2130 000 habitants. 9 habitants.

CH1GNAN, ROCHAN. 497 Pandja, sur un espace de 160 kilomètres en aval du grand coude dIchka-chim, jusquà Ouaoour, la capitale du Rochan. Daulre part, lexplo-rateur hindou Soubadar Haïdar-chah, connu dordinaire par son titre de« Havildar », remonta en 1874 le cours de lOxus, duBadakchan occidentalaux frontières du Rochan : il ne reste quune lacune de peu dimportanceentre les deux itinéraires.
