Au seizième siècle, les habitants de la Havane y possé-daient des porcheries el des plantations de manioc1, mais le bourg ne futbâti quen 1695, sur la pointe de terre de Yucayo, située à lextrémité dela baie entre les deux rivières de Yumuri et de San-Juan. Matanzas a debeaucoup dépassé les limites de la péninsule pour former, sur la rivegauche du Yumuri, le faubourg élégant de Versailles (Versalles), et à lest,par delà le San-Juan, les quartiers industriels de Pueblo Nuevo, où setrouvent les entrepôts et la gare principale. Sur la grande place de Matan-zas a été fusillé en 1844 le poète Placido, accusé davoir voulu souleverles noirs. La ville est dominée au nord par le chaînon de la Cumbre, quicommande le panorama grandiose de la ville et du port.
