La hauteur moyenne de lensemble du système,•en tenant compte des vallées (intermédiaires et des plateaux du sud surlesquels sappuient les montagnes, est évaluée seulement à 1200 ou1500 mètres ; mais les arêtes principales ont de 1800 à 2700 mètres. Lenœud central du système, au point de vue hydrographique, le massif doùsécoulent, au nord plusieurs affluents de la Katouii, à louest la Boukh-tarma, au sud rOïgour, tributaire mongol de lIke-eral, est traversé parune brèche qui na pas moins de 2820 mètres, daprès Mirochnitchenko :•cest lOulan-dabas ou la « Pierre rouge », ainsi nommé de ses couches deminerai de fer.
