Gen.Rosecrans then ordered an advance and our soldiersobeyed with a cheer. We soon heard continuous cheer-ing, and the Confederates were routed and on the run.Gen. Palmer was so elated over our success that hefairly stood up in the stirrups of his saddle and said,The boys have got them on the run, the boys havegot them on the run, and swung his hat above hishead. Pap Palmer, as he was called by some ofthe men, was loved ly his soldiers, and as a conse-quence Palmers division nearly always held its lineof battle, and did not know defeat. The day was drawing to a close, and the Con-federates were falling back, leaving the battlefield inour possession.
