Refr: G-M 59 Cont: Includes a portrait of the author Note: Pare, a rustic barber's apprentice of meagre education who never learned Latin or Greek, rose to great eminence and became surgeon to four kings of France in succession. He has been described as "one of the greatest figures of the Renaissance, and unquestionably its greatest surgeon" (Castiglioni). Edited by Malgaigne, himself an eminent surgeon, the above edition is considered the best collection of his works. It includes historical and critical notes, with an introduction on the history of surgery in the 16th and 17th centuries, and a section on the life and works of Pare
