Roger North,.in his Examen, tells usthat when the Rye House Plot became knoAA-n, theking commanded that Howard should be arrested,and that accordingly his house was searched bythe Serjeant-at-Arms, to whom he surrendered atdiscretion. He saved his own life by despicablyturning round upon the partners of his guilt. (Knightsbridg Who at Knightsbridge did hide Those brisk boys unspyd,That at Shaftesburys whistle were ready to follow, But when aid he should bring, Like a true Brentford king,lie was here with a whoop and there with a hollo ! Through Knightsbridge passed the corpse ofHenry VIIL, on its way to its last resting-place at Windsor The fact is thus recorded in the parishbooks of St. Margarets :— Paid to the poor menthat did bere the copis (copes) and other neces-saries to Knightsbridge, when that the King wasbrought to his buryal to Wynsor, and to the menthat did ring the bells, 3 shillings. The next historical event connected with thisneighbourhood is the intended assassination of William III. by two Jacobite gentlemen—curiouslyenough, named Barclay and Perkins—in 1694.Their plan was to waylay the king on his return to Kensington from some hunting expedition, and toshoot him. The plot, however, was revealed byone of their accomplices, who met at the Swan Inn, Knights
