Text Appearing Before Image:
ly afterwards Haydon wrote—and we canreadily imagine the spirit in which he jotted downthe lines— They rush by thousands to see TomThumb. They push, they fight, they scream, theyfaint, they cry Help ! and Murder ! They see memorials of the dead.. There were then onlythree or four tombstones to be seen in that part. One nearest the iron palisades was placed by jLord Petre in memory of an excellent man andscholar. Dr. Geddes. He was the author of a newtranslation of some part of the Holy Scriptures. The Catholics and High Church Protestants didnot approve of his conduct, because, in place ofvindicating the authority of their churches inmatters of religion, he supported the right ofprivate judgment. His stone I saw in perfectpreservation but a few years ago, in the sameplace as at first. It must have been designedlyremoved. Perhaps the epitaph displeased somestrait-laced official. I will repeat it from mftnory, though I am not certain I am correct to a word. Paddington.) DR. GEDDES. 211
Text Appearing After Image:
OLD AND NEW LONDON. (Paddington. Christian is iny name, Catholic my surname. IfI cannot greet thee as a disciple of Jesus, still Ishould love thee as my fellow-man. The Church of St. Mary ceased to be the parishchurch of Paddington in 1845, ^^^^en it was super-seded by the new Church of St. James, at thewest end of Oxford and Cambridge Terraces, andthe south end of Westbourne Terrace. By thesemeans, says the Report of 1840, accommodationwill be provided for 4,000 persons, or includingBayswater Chapel, which may hereafter be made aparochial chapel, for more than 5,000 persons, in aparish supposed to contain 20,000 souls. Theedifice, we are informed, was originally designedfor a secular building, but was altered to suit the■taste of the times. In 1844-46 was built a newchurch, in the elaborate Gothic style, dedicated tothe Holy Trinity, in Gloucester Gardens, BishopsRoad. It is a large church, capable of accommo-dating nearly 1,600 worshippers, and is built inthe Perpendicular style o
