213 24 OLD AND NEW LONDON. (Underground London. As we learn from j\Ir. Haywoods Report, towhich we are indebted for much of the informationhere gi^■e^, it is some years since subways werefirst constructed in various parts of London andelsewhere, and pipes of various character havebeen laid in one or other of them ; but the Viaductsubways were the first in which gas, water, andtelegraph pipes, with all the appliances necessaryto a complete system, were placed in one andthe same subway. The subways of the Viaducthave been on several occasions lighted up withgas and exhibited to the public; workmen haveexecuted repairs, and performed their ordinarywork in them ; and no special precautions havebeen found necessary as regards the use of lightsor fires, no explosions have taken place, nor hassuch contraction or expansion of pipes resultedfrom the variations of temperature, as materiallyto affect either the gas or water supply; and thesystem may be said to be successful.
