uld go upto London to pray, while that at Kentish Townwas more suited for the country folk, and thiscustom continued down to within the presentcentury. The earliest date that we meet with inthe registry of marriages and baptisms is 1660, in vestry should from time- to time direct; and thatthese lands were, by custom of the said manors,and for the form of law, to be held in the names ofeight trustees who were elected by the inhabitantsof the said parish in vestry assembled. There are four parcels of land, the rents andprofits of which have been immemorially appliedtowards the repair of the parish church and thechapel at Kentish Town. By reason of this appli-cation a church-rate in former times was consideredunnecessary, and whenever the disbursements ofthe churchwardens exceeded their receipts, theparishioners always preferred to reimburse themout of the poor-rate rather than make a church-rate. (St. Pancras. of Parliament in 1650, it appears that these landswere disposed of as follows, by Sir Robert Payne,Knight, Peter Benson, and others, feoffees in trust,by licence granted them from the lord of themanors of Tottenhall and Cantlows Court:— Towit, in consideration of fifty-four pounds to themin hand, paid by Mr. Richard Gwalter, they did, bylease dated the ist June, 9th Charles I. (a.d. 1633),demise unto the said Richard Gwalter four acres ofthe said land for twenty-one years, at twopence ayear rent. And in consideration of ^27 in hand,paid by the said Richard Gwalter, they did, byanother lease, dated 2nd August in the year afore-said, demise unto the said Richard Gwalter twoacres of the said land for the term aforesaid for thelike rent. There was also (a.d. 1650), a leasedated 20th June, 9th Charles I., unto Thomas Ive(deceased), of seventeen acres of the said land fortwenty-one years at ;£!) a year rent; the re-mainder of which was assigned unto
