St. Marythe Virgin. It is said that the Protector was atthe time so all-powerful in matters of state, that hev/as never forced to make to the parishioners anycompensation for the robbery of which he wasguilty, tliough from his time down to the year 1723 they were churchless, and in order to be decentlybaptised, married, or buried, they were forced tohave recourse to the ministers of neighbouringparishes. In accordance with an Act passed in the reign ofQueen Anne, for building fifty new churches in andaround the metropolis, this site was fixed on forthe first of these sacred edifices, which must havebeen much needed, on account of the growth of thepopulation westward of St. Clement Danes. Thefirst stone of it was laid in 1714, but it was not tillnine years later, as we have said, that it was actuallyconsecrated. 104—Vol. III. 86 OLD AND NEW LONDON. (St. Mary-le-Strand; arrival from Italy; and few structures, perhaps,have been more severely criticised. The buildingis tine of its kind, but not extensive, and stands, asit were, in the centre of the roadway of the Strand,in a line with the houses which form the southernside of Hol\\vell Street, and from which it is sepa-rated by the entrance to Newcastle Street. Theentrance, at the west end, is by a circular flightof steps which lead to a portico of Ionic columns,covered with a dome, which is crowned with anelegant vase. The columns are continued alongthe body of the church, with pilasters of the sameorder at the corners; and between the columns areniches, handsomely ornamented. Over the domeis a pediment, supported by Corinthian columns,which are also continued round the body of thechurch, over tliose of the Ionic order beneath,between which are the windows placed over theniches.
