Text Appearing Before Image:
, and here even, on thevery confines of the world, life had little more than four hoursto live. To the north the whole sky was flaming out intoindescribable splendours, and the long fire-streams radiatingfrom the nucleus now seemed to be literally holding the planetin their clasp. Enormous meteors were bursting out from theheart of the flaming cloud and exploding without a sound inthe ever-silent abysses of space. She stood rooted to the spot by the weird and awful gloriesof the spectacle, and for the time being seemed to forget evenKhalid and the indescribable dangers that were threateningthem both. Instead of being daunted, her spirit rose as thoughin response to the splendours before her. She felt that she wasstanding upon Natures funeral pyre watching the conflagrationof the world she had ruined. Saving only Khalid there w^asnot another human being within thousands of miles of her, andin her loneliness her soul seemed to expand and rise to anobility that it had never known before.
Text Appearing After Image:
The She-Wolf to her Lair 367 She saw the utter insignificance and contemptibility of thehuman strife which had been superseded and silenced by thismajestic assault of the primal forces of Nature, and for the firsttime in her life she thought of herself and her sins with adisgust and shame that humbled her in her own eyes to the dust. So she stood and watched, oblivious of everything but thecelestial glories above and around her, until a rapid seriesof frightful explosions seemed to run roaring round the wholehorizon. She looked up with shaded eyes towards the zenith. The central mass had suddenly become convulsed and expandeduntil it looked as though the whole sky had been transformedinto an ocean of fire torn by incessant storms. Huge masses of many-coloured flame were falling from itin all directions on the devoted earth, and as each of theseentered the atmosphere it burst into myriads of fragments whichfell in swarms until the blazing sky was literally raining fireover sea and land.
