ips awarded uponthe recommendations of the division superintendents, wherebyupon pledging himself to teach for two years in the schools ofVirginia, the student may receive his tuition free. These scholar-ships provide also for a considerable reduction in the rate ofboard at the college dining hall. This reduction of expenses to the scholarship students is madepossible by the desire of the State to develop a body of mentrained in the problems of education. Seven privately endowed scholarships are awarded on merit atthe college each year and many special high school scholarships aregiven throughout Virginia. William and Mary holds several thousands of dollars of theState Loan Fund, which may be lent out to students in sums notgreater than one hundred dollars each in a session. A great manyyoung men are pursuing courses through this aid who could nototherwise attend the college. The seat of literature in Williamsburg has ever, in my view,been an object of veneration.—George Washington.
