re were scores of times when a slight mistakecould easily have been disastrous, he never made it. Often we had magnificent views of mountains risinghigh on both sides of the stream. On the left lay thegneissic ridge which begins at the Black Canyon of theOmineca and runs northward along the Finlay, finallyculminating in some fine rugged peaks that tower a fullmile above the river. On the right the main Rockiesrose chain after chain, and through passes in the outerrange we now and then caught splendid glimpses ofrugged white peaks which seemed to challenge us tocome and climb them. Far ahead the mountains pinchedin upon the river, while summit upon summit, eachseemingly taller and more rugged than the one beforeit, burst into view. Of scenic wonders there was assur-edly no lack. Mulligans are made by boiling bits of meat—themore kinds the better—with a little of everything elsethat is obtainable. One mulligan on this stage of thetrip contained some caribou meat, a ruffed grouse, somebits of pork, rice, potatoes, dehydrated corn, cannedtomatoes, macaroni, salt, pepper, a dash of dehydratedcelery, and probably some other ingredients that I haveforgotten. The celery gave the added touch needed totransform the mulligan from merely good food into adish fit for the gods, and I advise every one who goeson such a trip to take along a can of this wonder-workingarticle. CHAPTER VIIA LUCKY DAY Late on the fourth day from the Forks, after astrenuous time bucking swift water, we camped in agrove of spruce beside the river and passed as comfor-table a night as the mosquitoes would permit.
