Thejudges look at their watches, for they havetimed the dogs and if they have run theirheat of forty minutes or over, they areordered up and the second brace is calledfor. These may not be on hand, somewagon has been late getting started ortaken the wrong road, and a wait is in-curred until the wagon comes up, or isfound. The braces of dogs are run one after an-other in the order drawn until all have hada chance on game; then comes the secondseries, in which the judges, after comparingtheir notes, and from keen observation,select the dogs which have made the bestshowing and drop the others. These win-ners are paired off according to the dis-cretion of the judges to be run a secondtime. Of course some good dogs are leftout, but they have had their chance, andeither took advantage of the opportunitygiven them, spoiled their chances or wereoutclassed. Each pair of dogs is not in a 270
