ficOcean bursts on our view. Ocean Side. This thriving town of a thousand inhabitants has a com-manding situation on a mesa two hundred feet above the level of the ocean. Fromthis point of view the coast line can be followed in either direction as far as the eyecan reach. Here there is one of the finest hotels (The South Pacific) on the coast, and here great improvements have been inaugurated by the enterprising citizens. The accommodations for sea bathing are most complete, and Ocean Side-is sure tobecome an exceedingly popular pleasure resort. Between Ocean Side and SanDiego, a distance of forty-seven miles, there are just a bakers dozen of sta-tions. At some of them one can see hotels of the most imposing size and beautifularchitecture, a house or two, and thousands of lot stakes, but no great showing ofbusiness or population. The stations occur in the following order : Carlsbad,Leucadia, Encinitas, Del Mar, Cardero, Sorrento Alpine Selwyn, La Jolla,Roses Siding, Morena and Old Town.

At the footof the city lies the land-locked bay, one of the most beautiful in the world, glisteninglike a sheet of silver in the genial rays of an unclouded sun. Between the bayand the ocean is the Coronado peninsula, on the expanded part of which is thetown of Coronado, with the largest hotel in the world. Beyond Coronado is thePacific Ocean, whose long, rolling swells break upon a level and far-extendingbeach, th
