(Population, 2,000. Distance fromSan Francisco, 55 miles. Elevation, 400 feet.) One of the loveliest cities of California is thatof Santa Cruz. Occupying a charming site on theseashore at the north end of the crescent-shaped bayof Monterey, it is at the mouth of the San Lorenzoriver, and recedes from a beautiful beach, extendingto a broad plateau and two terraces rising above it,surrounded by protecting hills. Santa Cruz is the most popular and fashionableseaside resort in the state, and is termed the New-port of the Pacific Coast. TO THE GOLDEN GATE. 227 the cities; and during the season, the population is increased to ten ortwelve thousand. Its bathing is its pride and its glory, and with its lovely beachof clean, white sand, its fine bath houses, and its safe and delightful waters, itsattractions in this line are unequaled. While the crowds are greatest during thevacation season, between May and September, the bathing is delightful the wholeyear round. Excursion trains are run to this place from San Francisco everySaturday and Sunday. The place itself has all the features of a modern progressive city, among whichmay be mentioned electric lights, gas, fine water system, fire department, streetcars, free library, telephones, three daily and two weekly papers, two banks, hand-some public buildings, fine schools and numerous churches. It has magnificentstreets, many being paved with bituminous rock, and its sidewalks are exceptionallygood. Its great number of cosy and attractive homes are among its chief features
