LOUIS ALMGREN, JR.Fire Chief, San Diego events. One was the succeesful extinguishment of a blind fire in the hold of thesteamer Alaskan while in port. This loss was about $20(1,000.00 aud the valueof property involved $2,800,000.00. The other event was the roport made by theNational Board of Fire underwriters of a test of the fire steamers of the departmentwhich showed an average efficienc>- of 103.4 percent. Only one steamer fell belowits rating and it showed 99 per cent. Regular monthly inspections of schools, theaters and other public l^uildingsare made by the captains of the different fire stations. Total storage capacity is 28,740,995, while the source of supplyabout 22 miles from town has at this time, water sufficient for seven years supply.A recent bond issue appropriated $340,000 for improving the water system in the city. THE SEWER DEPARTMENT The San Diego Sewer System contains over 92 miles of pipe, and has cost thecity about $2,000,000. Over 18 miles were laid in 1909. The .system drains to-ward the San Diego Bay, and with the exception of the La Jolla plant all the sew-age is carried out with the outgoing tides of the bay. With one exception theentire system
