He was the hero of the most daring andbrilliant exploit of the American Civil War—the destruction of the Albemarle, on the night ofOctober 27, 1864. That brave act gave himworldwide fame. DAVID HOADLEY was president^ of the Panama Railroad Company from1853 until October, 1871, eighteen years, whenhe resigned the position, and Mr. Joseph F.Joy, the secretary, was elected to the vacancy.Mr. John Keeler, who had been head book-keeper since 1856, was made secretary, and Mr.Henry Smith remained, as he had been for sev-eral years, the treasurer of the company. The Brig Line, as it was called, formed apart of the railroad companys assets. It wasorganized soon after the road was completed, in1855, and was composed of a line of ten sail-ing vessels between New York and Aspinwall,until 1870, when the business was transferred to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Thesesailing vessels, barks, and brigs of from 250 to400 tons, made regular and rapid voyages,laden with general cargo.
