e like result,it was at length felt that the Divine intentionwas being frustrated. The experiment of at-taching but one horse to the chariot on whichthe statue lay was then attempted, when, tothe amazement of all, the one animal easilydragged the weight into Albert—the episodebeing looked upon as a manifestation of the willof the Deity that Notre Dame should findher resting-place in Albert. Duringthe long struggle generally known asthe Hundred Years War, Picardy, as has beenshown, was continually the scene of pillage anddestruction, at one time by the English, at anotherby the Burgundians. Through all these vicissi-tudes the Image was preserved ; even during theterrible times of the Revolution it escaped de-struction. Amongst the earhest pilgrims to this shrine,in its temporary home in the fields, was St.Colette, who, it must be remembered, was a nativeof Corbie. The great basilica, of red brick and white stone,which has been erected in honour of the statue,was begun in 1885. It is Byzantine in style,with a campanile. It covers a large area and isbest viewed from the east. The west end is a littleclumsy ; the campanile seems overweighted atits summit, on which is a gilded figure of theVirgin, holding forth in her arms the ChristChild. It seems a pity that this tower was notplaced in the usual position of campaniles, abovethe west front, as in this church it dwarfs thefagade. It is intended, no doubt, as a beaconfor the country round, and the idea of the HttleChrist Child, held aloft to be a guide to all, withHis tiny arms stretched out to His People, isbeautiful. The interior is gorgeous in the extreme ; thewalls are covered with frescoes or mosaics, andthe pillars throughout are of different marble.The decoration is so complete that there
