tarted in the morning on Batemanselephant for Peer Pahar, a village extending I shouldthink fully three miles. Passed a few dilapidated buildings and a bridgecased with stone. The body of it seemed to be built oflarge shingle, oval shaped, each one weighing abouteight or ten maunds, embedded in strong mortar andapparently imperishable. The bridge was quiteovergrown with jungle springing from the parapetson both sides. Where the village opened to the landscape a beau-tiful view was obtained. It was a sea of grassjungle extending to the foot of the hills, which ap-peared about a mile off. The hills were beautifully lit up by the morningsun, and the sameness of the immense expanse ofgrass was diversified by small bushes that markedthe different lines of small nullahs which intersectedthe immense plain. ca. WATER TRIP TO BHAGALPOOR. 263 bag very many. Reached the boats about 12 oclock.In the evening took the dogs out and shot severalchickore and black partridge. \Uli. Started for Koddje, an uninhabited factoryclose to the foot of the hills. The dak road runs through one of the mostextensive jungles imaginable, the abode of therhinoceros and tiger. Saw a herd of deer, a fewpigs and peacocks, and came on the remains of abuffalo. When within two miles of the factory I wasdirected by the descent and hovering of vultures toa deep jungle by the side of a stagnant nullah, andbeating it up, found a fresh carcase of a buffalo. The elephant gave notice of something on foot,)oassed the carcase and discovered the footmarks of alarge tiger. After beating about for some quarterof an hour I noticed some tall grass moving, andsoon getting a peep at his majesty I fired. The shottold, but did not stop him.
