^^ ( 97 ) pofitlon to an opinion, which, in one periodof our hiftory, feems to have obtained con-fiderable footing—that it was of a perniciousor poifonous quality j and that this was fa,we find among other authorities, that, in1428, the Parhament petitioneda gainft hops,as a wicked weed: it was introduced into Eng-land, in 1524, from the Netherlands; and twoyears preceding, encouragement by aft of Parrliament was given to the cultivation of it, byexempting lands employed for thefe purpofesfrom penalties. The produce to the revenue,in modern times, from the increafed trade inthis article amounted, in th« year 1791, toninety thoufand and fifty-nine pounds onejQiilling and ten pence.
