Description |
English: Portrait of a Naval Officer, circa 1740 A three-quarter-length portrait to right in a blue velvet coat and breeches with gold buttons and gold embroidered buttonholes. The large cuffs of the coat are of red silk, matching the waistcoat, which is gold-frogged. His right hand is on his hip, while his left with his gold-laced hat under his arm rests on his sword. He wears a tie wig and stands against a rocky cliff on the left, while on a plinth to his right is a letter with illegible writing. In the background on the right is a three-decker with closed galleries, a red flag at the fore and a Union flag at the mizzen. Painted in about 1740 this is a portrait of a flag-captain richly dressed. It may be Captain Thomas Griffin, who was flag-captain to Vice-Admiral Cavendish in the 'Blenheim', 90 guns, at Portsmouth in 1735. |
