gland, Scotland, and Walesall together. Rockhampton stands on level country on both sides ofthe river, the chief town situated on the south side, both con-nected by a bridge 1100 feet long. The town itself is not yet40 years of age. It really began with the Canoona rush in 1858.The first land was sold in Sydney in 1858, the year before separation,,and 198 lots realised ,£4108. Nine quarter acre lots fronting thereserved Quay brought .£527 10s. The town was gazetted a munici-pality on the 8th of December, 1860. The trade of 1860 is indicatedby a sum of £38,202 for exports, and £65,822 for imports. Thefirst sod of the railway to the westward was turned on September27th, 1865. The municipality contains an area of 15,072 acres. In1860 it was visited by Sir Charles Nicholson, ex-President of theQueensland Legislative Council. Sir Charles ended his visit by buying a considerablequantity of land. While there he presided as chairman at a meetingto form a Cotton Growing Association. The first resolution wasmoved by Alfred Brown and seconded by Mr. Low ; the second byAlbrecht Feez and seconded by William Landsborough. The resultwas the unanimous adoption of a petition to the Upper Housepraying for encouragement to greater population. Shortly after thetown was visited by Sir George Bo wen, who made his usual com-parisons with the West Indies, Spain, Italy, and Greece. In his.opinion the district could grow anything produced on the surface ofthis earth, and presumedly more or less of the products of all theother planets.
