or althoughEighth Street has the reputation, and deservedly so, of being acheap street, it is by no means the case that the goods offered forsale are proportionately inferior to those displayed on the more aristo-cratic thoroughfare, Chestnut Street. On Eighth Street also, for theconvenience of shoppers, are several choice restaurants, where excel-lent meals are served at reasonable rates. The Stetson Hat Factory, at Fourth Street and MontgomeryAvenue, is a matter of interest to shoppers as the largest manufactoryfor fine hats in the world, and employing 1,000 persons in producingone of the most celebrated of Philadelphias products. It was startedby the John B. Stetson Company in 1S65 ; and in connection with itare established, the Union Mission Hospital and Free Dispensary, theUnion Mission, a well-stocked library and inviting reading-room, abuilding association, a savings fund, a beneficial association, the Stet-son Institute, with its various classes, and a well-equipped gymnasium.
