The Kaaterskill and Stony clovesare more frequented and less hazardous than the grand old Plat-terkill, and almost as beautiful; yet with the latter we must feelthe sympathy that one gives a defiant conqueror. It restscaptive, if you like, by the present day in one sense, but boldlysuggestive of the days when its first inhabitants lived in it with-out touching one stone or curve, one stream or angle, that naturehad set there; and the steady stream of progress, or perhaps Ishould say tourist, may go on another fifty years before thePlatterkill will succumb to the imperious claims of man. Saugerties is an incorporated village, but has no bondedindebtedness, and taxes are low. It has a daily and two weeklynewspapers, several public schools, one parochial school, and anacademy; seven churches, mountain water introduced by thegravity system, electric and gas lights, telegraph and telephonecommunication, and several hotels offering good accommodation,

Saugerties is favorably situated for the location of industrialenterprises. There is a wide-awake board of trade; transporta-tion charges are reasonable; there are two banks of deposit and asavings bank; and abundant water-power and labor. The villageis already the seat of several important industries, among whichare the Sheffield Company, manufacturing writing-papers, blank-books, and envelopes; the Martin Cantine Company, manufactur-ing coated papers and cardboard for lithographing purposes, andthe factory of the Barkley Fiber Company, devoted to makingwood-pulp by the sulphide process. The great white-lead factoryat Glenerie belongs here too. Most of these establishments canbe seen from the steamer, in the narrow harbor which has beenmade by the Federal Government, where the wharves measure amile or more along each sid
