I hope the timeis not far distant when Randolph, Holbrook and Avonwill combine to support a school garden supervisor whocan give more time to the work. I believe the Statewill pay one-half the salary. Equipment Practically throughout the elementary schools, wehave old, unadjustable desks. Many of these are somarked, defaced and cut that they cannot be usedwhen children write. I recommend that a policy beadopted whereby each year, one or two rooms may berefurnished with new adjustable desks. The above tabfe shows the distribution of childrenaccording to age and grade. Assuming that six yearsof age is the proper entrance age and allowing one year 128 TOWN OF RANDOLPH for later entrance at seven, all children between theseages would be considered of normal school age in thefirst grade. Those below six would be consideredunder age and those above seven, over-age or retarded. In past years, some children have entered the firstgrade at five years -of age and sometimes under five.They now enter at five and one-half or older. To mymind, this large number of children entering schoolbefore six is largely responsible for some of the failuresin our work. Though some children can enter school atfive and profit as much from the instruction as childrenentering at six, yet I believe that when children aretaken in general, that six years of age is better thanfive or five and one-half. Immaturity at entranceleaves its ill effects in each succeeding grade and in theHigh school. I recommend
