We thought different, andour judgment proved correct. After arranging our mode of attack, in case heshould return, we laid down to rest, Allen keep-ing watch. I being young, soon fell sound asleep.Some time in the night I was woke up by Allenshaking me and whispering in my ear: Wakeup Buckeye, hes here. After I succeeded in get-ting my eyes open I saw by the light of thebright moon the Grizzly upon his hind legs,rearing up against the tree trying to reach thebeef. On taking a look at him, and as I had heardof their strength and ferocity when attacked,(he being an immense brute—looking the size ofan ordinary smoke house,) I became somewhat

Withfear and trembling, I leveled my gun across thelog as Allen had already done. Upon his touch-ing my foot, we fired together. The bear wasprobably twenty feet from us. At the crack ofthe guns he gave an angry snort. (This noiseresembles the snort of a horse when at play hestops running, throws his head high in the air,and forces the breath from his lungs through hisnostrils, so producing a sound similar to theangry snort of a grizzly.) As the sound of theguns and snort of bear died out, we heard asmashing behind us and back of our brush tent.My first thought was another grizzly. Grasp-ing my revolver and whirling around I sawJo Draper scrambling up a small white fir treethat stood just behind our tent. When I firstsaw him he was fully fifteen feet up the tree andmaking time that would not have disgraced anOhio grey squirrel. As
