The Cuban Cay Cantilleshas become to the English sailors King Tay-lor key; Cantilles reef has been variouslyaltered to King Taylor reef or Kicking Tay-lor reef, and now appears on the chartsmoved ten miles to the east and south as JackTaylor reef. A word for the lexicographers isMehagan; Calapatch IMehagan reef as itappears on the chart should be Calapatchreef, Mehagan being an Indian word for acoral reef ex-posed at all times. Calapatch isa corruption of carapace and is applied likethe latter word to the upper shell of the sea-turtle. The Mexican coast from Cape Catochesouth scarcely has been touched except forthe meager examinations of )wrts and har-bors; and excepting British Honduras andbrief work near Greytown the whole CentralAmerican coast, including Guatemala, Hon-duras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, is badlycharted. But the tale of duty un-fulfilled begins again with the Colombiancoas and continues until Venezuela ceasesand British Guiana takes up the white mansburden.* Caribbean harbors and their en-trances are in the main well charted. Span-ish navigators and port oflicials have showngood results where hand work and the lesserinstruments of survey sufficed. This earhercartography has been supplemented princi-pally by British surveys. British Hondurasis dependably completed, as are the variousBritish insular possessions. The Danish,Dutch and French island charts were consid-ered satisfactory up till ten years ago, butthe Martinique explosion and consequent dis-turbance of the ocean bed has made advis-able a reexamination of the entire Windwardquadrangle. Porto Rico has been charted inthe scientific method of the Coast and Geo-detic Survey, and a Hydrographic Office sur-vey of Haiti is approach
