t lies just above the mausoleum—the marvelous conception of a Virginia sculptor, Edward Virginius Valen-tine, in whose studio at Richmond this most exquisite of all memorialmarbles took form under his inspired chisel. January 19, 1907, one hundred years after the birth of General Lee andthirty-seven years after his death, a Lee Centennial at Washington and LeeUniversity produced a demonstration of feeling that has rarely attended alike celebration. The Lee alumni attended, almost entirely, a great num-ber of men who have deeply etched the evidence of their work and characterin the higher attainments of half a world. Leading men of the North cameto testify to the softening and warmth of hearts where once only flint ofhatred struck fire. By cable, wire and letter the intense interest of meneverywhere was manifested. The letter of the President of the UnitedStates, Theodore Roosevelt, illustrates the general recognition at this timeof General Lees eminence as man, soldier, and citizen:
