Roman: Coin Hoard
Description
English: CHETWYND ASTON AND WOODCOTE, SHROPSHIRE (2005 T70) Richard Abdy 40 AR/BI radiates to ad 274 Circumstances of Discovery Found by Mr I. Wild with the aid of a metal detector, 14th November 2004. Find was made at a depth of 3-4" and in a straight line of about 25 yards. Discussion A small radiate hoard, it is slightly earlier than the most typical British debased radiate hoards with only one identifiable radiate of Tetricus and a good number of the earlier, more silvery coins of Postumus and the pre-260 Central Empire. The collapse in the silver content of the Gallic coinage - AD 268 - had seemingly yet to take its full effect at the time of abandonment (unless careful selection was made by the hoarder) and the very debased coins of Gallienus's sole reign and Claudius II had made little inroad. It should be noted that the high proportion of corroded illegible coins could distort this picture - they appear very base and it may have been the case that the fully debased coins present reacted more during burial than the more silvery coins. For a discussion on the highly variable content of radiate hoards ending around the time of the death of Victorinus see E. Besly on the Bassaleg (Gwent) hoard (one denarius and 904 radiates to AD 270) in CHRB IX, pp. 87-100; C. Cheesman on The Radiate Hoards in CHRB X, pp. 171-9; see also R. Abdy on the 'M1' hoard (207 denarii and 228 radiates to AD 270) in CHRB XII (forthcoming). The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary programme run by the United Kingdom government to record the increasing numbers of small finds of archaeological interest found by members of the public. The scheme started in 1997 and now covers most of England and Wales. Finds are published at https://finds.org.uk
