sombre, gloomy mountains makesup an ensemble of surpassing beauty. Thecentres of populaticin are few, far between, andof minute dimensions. The railway line from Galway ends at Clif-den, a town so unimportant and quiet that,in itself, it does not warrant remark. It wasfounded in the reign of George IV., and thisearly foundation consisted of but a singlehouse, though it is the gateway to the wonder-ful coast scenery of the region to the north-ward, not actually in Connemara, but whatis known as Joyces Country. Of all the landlocked bays of this region,none equals Killary Harbour, which is simplythe elongated estuary of the tiny river Eriff. The hamlet of Leenane is the metropolis ofthese parts, and is so very small and unim-portant that it would hardly be remarked, ex-cept for the fact that no other of even thesame rank lies within a radius of twenty miles.The situation of Leenane is charming, at thehead of Great Killary.
