But the background of the picture is the most impressiveand grand. The mountains rise to a height of rather morethan six thousand one hundred feet above the sea, and are cleftasunder by precipices thousands of feet in depth. To comeand gaze on these splendid footprints of the Almighty, it isworth a journey of thousands of miles. During every hourof the day, they assume a new feature beneath the differentdegrees of sunlight. But the most perfect view of them canbe obtained just as the sun is going down behind the wave ofthe ocean. A tourist continues his gaze as though some in-visible chain held him to the spot. Towering far above La-haina, and at a distance of two miles, may be seen the semi-nary of Lahainaluna. But Lahaina has a very different appearance to a strangerwhen ashore. LAHAINA ON SHORE. 293 between dream-life and life that is real. It has but one prin-cipal street, intersected by a few others running at right an-gles. They are all too narrow, and without any regular gra-ding, and many portions of them are inclosed by ruined adobewalls. Their surface is composed chiefly of a red tufaceouslava-dust, deep, hot, and dry during a very large portion ofthe year, and very obnoxious to pedestrians. But all thesefeatures are relieved by a various and extensive foliage, com-prising the bread-fruit (Artocarpus incisa), the cocoa-nut(Cocos nucifera), the candle-nut (Aleurites triloba), the koa(Acacia falcata\ and the hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus). Theseafford a romantic and refreshing shade from the mid-day sun. In Lahaina the public buildings are few in number anduncostly in appearance.
