Kindergartens.—In primary school build-ings it is very desirable to have two kinder-garten rooms, separated by sliding or foldingdoors. Kindergarten rooms are to be isolatedso that games and music will not disturb otherclasses. Floors and walls should be sound-deadened. School authorities are agreed that thekindergarten should occupy a room convenientto entrance on the first floor. A circle shouldbe painted on the floor and the room equippedwith a toilet, specially low and carefully installed. Laboratories.—Physics, chemistry, biologyand the other laboratories are usually groupedon the top floor about and adjoining the lectureroom. The lecture room which should beespecially prepared and equipped for lecturedemonstration purposes ought to be very ac-cessible to laboratories on account of the duallecture and laboratory uses of the greatest por-tion of the equipment. The size of laboratories will depend entirelyupon the completeness of the equipment and thenumber of pupils to be accommodated. Oneteacher can very nicely supervise the work oftwenty-five pupils, though a larger numbermight be undesirable. Rooms should not be ex-tremely large, while crowding is similarly unde-sirable. With cupboards, fume chambers, ex-periment tables, etc., a room 30 by 40 feet willaccommodate twenty-five pupils. Chemical laboratory tables should be placedat right angles to windows and equipped withsinks, gas jets, shelving and lockers. To avoidunnecessary plumbing and fittings, tables maybe arranged that pupils work opposite one an-other.
