XVll east coast, their occupation was temporary, and almost predatory.Even on tlie west coast, and among the western isles, where theirpower was little resisted or disputed, except among themselves,their dominion was that of a continuous stream of pirates succes-sively plundering the country and each other, and scarcely yetapproaching to settled and civilized government. I have ventured to put down our own city of Edinburgh in thismap of Scotland of the tenth century. I wish I could also givethe local habitation for the city of Giudi, which Bede tells us wasin medio of our firth ; or find names for the capitals of the twonations of the Picts, one of which apparently was low down in thevalley of Stratherne, and the other somewhere on the short run ofthe Ness.
