Text Appearing Before Image:
inda Mr. Chaplin of those days in hot dispute with Bakewellin 1788, because the great Leicester breeder had dared tostep in and have a look, unbidden, at Mr. Chaplins rams.Mr. Chaplin wrote as follows : After my refusal on the 21stinst. to let you see my sheep before they were collected andsorted at home, I did not expect to hear of your meanlysneaking into my pastures at Wrangle (most appropriatename) on the 24th, with two other people, driving my sheepinto the fold and examining them. To which the greatBakewell rejoined: We asked a 3^oung man if you had anyrams there ; he informed us you had. Where are they ? In the close next the house. May we see them ? Yes. Who would show them ? I will. From which we sup-posed he had frequently shown them to others. We thenalighted and went into the close ; he opened the pen gateand we assisted him in driving them in, about fourteen innumber. We have introduced this short extract from arather angry correspondence as a little piece of human nature
Text Appearing After Image:
IMPROVED LINCOLN SHEEP. 23 not without interest. It is life-like, and so similar to whathappens even now when rival breeders take a sly peep ateach others proceedings as to be also instructive. Not quitedignified, perhaps, but truly showing that one touch ofnature makes the world akin. The new or improved Lincoln is the product of Leicestercrosses upon the old Lincoln. He is truly a magnificentcreature of true long-woolled character, requiring rich pas-tures and plenty of space. The farmers of Lincolnshireare justly proud of their breed, and we see that Mr. Rewspeaks of them as * this famous old breed, showing thatthe controversy of the closing years of the last century isforgotten. As a mutton sheep he is inferior to the Downbreeds so far as quality is concerned, but for exportation forcrossing purposes no class of sheep is in greater demand, andvery high prices are paid for good specimens.
