The characterof the climbing at times was such that a similar or worsemisadventure had to be reckoned among the possibilities;for a steep incline would be sure to end with a crevasse,a rock talus, or a precipice. Consequently we redoubledour precautions, planting our alpenstocks with care, andstepping with precision. Mercurial barome-ters, a boiling-point thermometer, wet- and dry-bulb ther-mometers, and other apparatus were carried to eachsummit. The barometers were the same as those usedat Mt. Whitney. Check readings were made at SanFrancisco and at Portland; and simultaneous readingsfor sea-level conditions at Seattle, Tacoma, Portland,Spokane, Red Bluff, and Eureka, through th
