Is there any reality or sincerity in party conflicts ?The question is suggested by the engaging spectacle tobe seen in the Members smoking-room any night of aSession. Political oj^ponents who, in the Chamber notan hour before, angrily shouted at each other across thefloor, exchange their real opinions of questions andpolicies, with mutual amity and confidence, in freeand unrestrained talk, and witli many a hearty out-burst of laughter, over coffee and cigarettes. Thus itis tliat party conflicts in the House of Commons usuallyend serenely in a cloud of smoke ! In truth, party animosity in the House of Commonsrarely goes far or deep. But, however severe may bethe political strain in the Chamber at times, in thesmoking-room it is always relaxed, and no other rivalryis known there but that of who can say the cheeriestwoid and tell the funniest story.

The Right Hon.GEORGE WYNDHAM. The most attractive figure on the Treasury Benchduring tlie Balfour Administration, from the point ofview of the Ladies Gallery, was Mr. George Wyndham.There he was considered the handsomest man in tlieHouse. About Mr. Wyndham, certainly, there is an air otpoetry and romance. He comes, indeed, of historicallypicturesque stock. Is he not the duect descendant, onhis mothers side, of that romantic figure in Irish history.Lord Edward FitzGerald, son of the Duke of Leinster,the leader of the Irish revolutionaries of 1798, who diedin prison of wounds received in resisting arrest? But Mr. Wyndham has sterling mental qualities aswell as rare personal giaces. With a good deal of affec-tion and sentiment for things Irish, as well as with theblood of the mart3rs in his veins, it was fitting that heshould be Chief Secretary for Ireland. In this themost difficult of offices to fill, he established hisundoubted capacity as a statesman. He introduced and carried through
