r two temperance journals, and a few smaller periodicals. Thecountry districts own about a score of newspapers, of which one ortwo are published twice and the remainder once a week. Politicalmatters are discussed with vigor and outspokenness in the publicjournals, and the tone of the press generally is moderate anddecorous, though there are exceptions. The oldest journal in thecolony is the Register. The first number was published in Londonon the 18th June, 1836, and the second in Adelaide on the 3rdJune, 1837. After the j&rst few months of its existence in thecolony it was published once a week; afterwards for some yearstwice a week; but for the last thirty-five it has been a dailyjournal. The leading newspapers of Adelaide are conducted withgreat enterprise, and of themselves afford evidence of the progressof the colony. Many columns are devoted to European, foreign, and intercolonial telegrams and lengthy telegraphic reports ofimportant meetings all over Australia are published.
