f January, 1863, Harpers Weekly appeared with acartoon representing Columbia indignantly demanding of PresidentLincoln and Secretary of War Stanton that they restore her sonskilled in that battle. Below the picture is the reading matter: Columbia: Where are my 15,000 sons—murdered at Fred-ericksburg? The battle of Fredericksburg was fought on December 13th,1862, between General Burnside, commanding the Army of thePotomac, and General Lees force. The Union troops, time andagain, assaulted the heights where the Confederates had takenposition, but were driven back with frightful losses. The enemy,being behind breastworks, suffered comparatively little. At thebeginning of the fight the Confederate line was broken, but theresult of the engagement was disastrous to the Union cause. Burn-side had 1,152 killed, 9,101 wounded, and 3,234 missing, a total of13,487. General Lees losses, all told, were not much more than5,000 men.
