English: Stellarum fixarum hemisphaerium boreale: The northern hemisphere projected on the plane of the aequator in which all the stars contain'd in the Britannick Catalogue (as publish'd by Dr Halley) are carefully laid down and adapted to the beginning of the year 1690, the asterismes being drawn to answer the description of the ancients.Celestial Planisphere. This intricate chart shows the northern celestial hemisphere as known in 1690. Its pair, G200:3/3, shows the southern celestial hemisphere. They were produced in 1690 by mathematician Joseph Harris and publisher John Senex. Both include careful description of the construction of the charts and a series of examples and problems for how to use them. Edmond Halley’s Britannick Catalogue, on which this planisphere was based, was derived from a draft catalogue by John Flamsteed, the Astronomer Royal. Flamsteed had distributed it to fellow astronomers in 1686-7 on the understanding that its contents were too provisional for publication. Harris, Stellarum fixarum |
