The mob re-treated aghast, rallied, retreated, rallied again, and throughand through their numbers the deadly bullets mowedwrinkled and crumpled swaths, until upon the hill andalong the tracks the wild and frenzied rioters precipitatelywithdrew, carrying tJieir dead and wounded, whose numberGod alone may know. But they left only to return in theblackness of the night with fury and forces increased, tobring with them arson and flame, destruction and ruin.
