form otEurydice, while the hand and arm of Orpheuswere rocked vigorously with a coarse tool, not bya texture tool, be it noted, such as was usedby Samuel Cousins and his school, but for strong full rocking right from the beginning. The steel-facing of copper-plates has become amatter of keen controversy, and Mr. Short is oneof its strongest advocates, confident, after manytests, that there is no recognizable differencebetween a proof from the copper and one fromthe plate after steel-facing. Yet the advantage ofthe latter in printing is great. From the copper,Mr. Short tells me, he can print only about 30proofs of fine quality, as they could in Turnersday, while from the same plate, with a steel facingof an absolutely imperceptible thickness, he canprint from 50 to 150 brilliant impressions. A picture poet he certainly is. Can anyonewith the love of the Cornish coast in his soul, hiseyes filled with its colour, look at that delightfulplate, A Slant of Light at Polperro* for instance,without feeling that here, in black-and-white, theartist has caught the very spirit, as well as tone,of the place in one of its moods of most enchantingbeauty ? If only Mr. Short would give us more ofCornwall ! Yet the influence of light, rather thanthe spirit of place, is, of course, the guidingmotive of his mezzotints, as it must be of thefinest paintings.
