The approach to Dansville, from either direction, is through acountry abounding in picturesque scenery, which apparently culminatesin the surroundings of this hill-encircled town. Lying 400 feet belowthe railroad, it is enclosed on three sides by an amphitheatre of hillswhich, on either hand, stretch far away, and are lost on the distanthorizon. Like a vast living panorama, hundreds of square milesof valley and hill are spread out before the traveller, who is both sur- SUMMER EXCURSION ROUTES AND RATES.

98 DELAWARE, LACKAWANNA & WESTERN R. R. prised and delighted with the beauty of a picture of surpassing loveliness, rarely equalled in this or any foreign land. Nature is here more gentlypicturesque than rugged or grand. Although the hills rise upwards of athousand feet, they are dotted almost to their summits with farms, vine-yards, and grain fields, which alternate with masses of evergreens andstretches of timber land. On nearer acquaintance many hidden attractions are discovered bythe artist and the lover of the beautiful—wild, rocky ravines, with pre-cipitous sides and crystal cascades, deep gorges set with pine and hem-lock, numerous mountain streams and tangled undergrowth, where thesilence of the forest is broken only by the song of the bird or the whirrof the partridge. Stony Brook Glen, similar in its rocky formation andwaterfalls to Watkins Glen, a favorite resort, is two miles from thetown; winding roads lead over the hills in every direction and providecharming walks
