On they went, however,determined not to be beaten by the red man, whoshowed no sign of fatigue or stopping. Finally, inspite of their determination to the contrary, they feltabsolutely compelled to cry halt, when lo! the In-dians halted, removed their packs, and, smiling backat them, no doubt in appreciation of their discomfort,calmly began to pick the blue berries which grew inabundance all along the route.
