it is iden-tified, much of it having been gathered during the Survey of New YorkState. Large collections had also been made from the Western Statesfor the purpose of fixing the New York geological nomenclature. Itcomprised 80,000 to 100,000 specimens, including about 7,000 types andfigured specimens. The acquisition of this collection placed the Museumin the lead among American institutions in respect to Paleozoic fossils.Especially noteworthy in the Hall Collection, aside from the New Yorkseries, are the Potsdam fossils from Minnesota; Trenton forms fromWisconsin and Iowa; Niagara fossils from Indiana; corals from thefalls of the Ohio River; crinoids from Burlington, Iowa; and the LowerCarboniferous fauna of Spergen Hill, Indiana. The price paid for theHall Collection was $65,000, $40,000 of which was specially subscribedby the Trustees and friends of the Museum. The dupUcates wereseparated into the collections, some of which were sold, others used inexchange for other material. (42)
