This business de-veloped from the marine insurance on its \\ estIndia cargoes, added fire insurance as a branch,and in 1846 life insurance. The loans of its in-surance companies with their vast assets notre^ricted bv law as are those of New iork,have been one of the greatest agencies m devel-oping the West, amounting to several hundreamillions of dollars. There are now six litecompanies, two of which also have accidentbranches —the latter being the onginal andchief department in one; five fire companies be-sides a countv mutual, and the Lnited Statesbranches of three foreign companies; and a HARTFORD.

Fire-arms, includnig Catling guns, at the famousColt Works; electric machinery and vehicles;bicycles, of which it is the centre in the UnitedStates; cyclometers; woven-wire mattresses;horse nails; screws ; steam-engines and boilers;typewriters; leather belting; and special machin-ery of all kinds, besides knit goods, furniture,carriages, harness, and many other things aremanufactured here. It has also one of the larg-est printing houses in New England, which hasmanufactured many famous works; four dailypapers, one of them the oldest newspaper inthe United States (The Courant, 1764), anda number of weeklies, monthlies and quarterlies.
