=: O AMUSING EPISODE 93 equally ridiculous decision. One of the batsmen,who had ventured out of his ground, was plainlystumped by Mr. Bush, but much to every onesastonishment was given * not-out. This was adecision we could scarcely accept, but in responseto our request for an explanation the umpirepromptly said, ^^Ah, Mr. Bush, I was watchingyou then, and when you took the ball the tip ofyour nose was in front of the wicket, and, as youknow, rule 35 says that if any part of a wicket-keepers person be over or before the wicket thestriker shall not be out if he is stumped. Ofcourse we could not dispute the decision afterthis ingenious explanation ; so the batsman wenton with his innings. A still more amusing episode, of which Mr.Bush was again the hero, took place in our secondinnings. When only a few runs were needed towin the match Bush joined Mr. Gilbert, who wasset and batting well. The two batsmen agreed tosteal runs wherever possible—in fact, to adopt tipand run tactics.
