h cormorants, gulls, eligugs, and guillemots, and otherrarer species of our sea birds which delight to rear their broodsin safety on the lofty cliffs towards the west. Snow rarelyfalls and never lies on the sunny soil; the chill of frost isseldom felt; yet the air is always fresh and bracing withthe breezes that sweep across half the world from the opensea. Close to the Priory a spring of water rises whichsupplied the needs of the Caldey Monks of long ago. Communication with the mainland, (but rarely interruptedby the north-east gales which occasionally lash the waters ofthe bay into fury,) is made by a private steamer. Thisdaily brings the letters across the Caldey Roads separatingthe Island from Tenby, and provides for such connectionas is necessary, fetching visitors and provisions, and servingto keep sufficient touch with the world from which it liesapart: less severed than in earlier times, for the Lighthousewhich stands on the high land to the south not only warns S> 46 &

To the east can be seen the peninsula ofGower: on the north-east rise the Black Mountains: to thenorth, over Tenby, the Precelly hills are visible: to thesouth on a clear day (and there are many such in thissunny spot) the Devonshire coast and Caldeys twin sister,Lundy Island, can be distinguished : to the south-west, pastS. Govans Head, there stretches away to America the openocean. There are some interesting relics of bygone times,geological and religious. In the Priory Church is an incised Stone, five feet high,bearing the legend, ascribed to the ninth century, Et singno(signo) cruets in illam fingsi (finxi) rogo omnibus ibi exovent proanima Catuoconi, which is thus translated by Professor Rhys, And I have provided it with a cross; I ask all who walk inthis place to p
