THREE ELECTRIC PLANTS Petitions have lately been rece-ved at theoffice of the Secretary of Public Works forpermission to install electric lighting plants atSanto Domingo and Cartagena in SantaClara Province, and in La Catalina, Havana. CUBA RR. Its reported that the Cuba RR. has placedan additional order for 15 locomotives withthe American Locomotive Co. On June 3d the first train was sent over thenew branch of the Cuba Raih-oad from Place-tas to Fomento. Ultimately this branch willbe continued to Trinidad, and of comse milbe of immense benefit to this district. HAVANA CENTRAL RAILROAD This company is reported as being in themaiket for 500 20-ton and 50 30-ton flat cars,100 30-ton box cars and 6 consolidated loco-motives. ^J ^ ^ W) :.§ T H E CIV BAREVIEW 27 MANUFACTURE OF PAPER AT PRESTON In conjunction with the making of sugar from cane at Preston another important industryis being conducted successfully in the manufacture of wrapping-paper from the by-product ofsugar-cane, bagasse or pulp. The mill has now Ijeen in operation for a period of ten months, and inthe earlier stages was only operated as an experiment. The work was started in connectionwith and under the direction of the Wisconsin Universitj^ Laboratories where the original testsand experimental work was carried on, and the plant at Preston is now in charge of the graduatesof this institution. A staff of 25 men is now employed in the mill and four tons of paper is thedaily output. The facilities and machinery at present provide only for the manufacture of sev-eral grades and weights of wrapping paper. Arrangements are now under way and the requiredmachinery will be added for the manufacture of all grades of paper. The pulp runs about twoto
